Nutrition: Intestinal Health
By J. Bradley Myers ,CNT, CC: a graduate of SWIHA's Holistic Nutrition program.

Do you suffer from: bloating after eating, chronic fatigue, Fibromyalgia, irritable bowel, migraine headaches, acid reflux, diarrhea or asthma? Do you have a family history of colon disease, Crohn’s or celiac disease?  If so, you may be contributing to these problems by eating the wrong foods. Many of these symptoms are reactions to foods or combinations of foods.

One percent of adults and three percent of children have clinically proven allergic reactions to food. These reactions are the leading catalyst to many diseases. When discussing intestinal health we are basically talking about digestion.  The main components in digestion are the enzymes produced in our bodies that breakdown the food. These digestive enzymes are powerful but selective. They each work on specific macronutrients. Proteins, fats and carbohydrates are broken down with specific enzymes secreted in the saliva, stomach and intestines. This breakdown does not happen in an efficient manner if there is not a sufficient amount of enzymes present.

When we do not adequately breakdown our foods, we do not receive the complete nutritional benefit from that food.  Without that nutrition our body does not get the fuel it needs to maintain its vital functions nor can it meet our energy requirements. This is similar to not getting good gas mileage in your car. Your body is running but in a less than efficient way. The fatigue that can be a result of deficient nutrition can affect every aspect of our lives including our sleep and exercise cycles.
The other problems that can arise when we do not breakdown our foods, due to a lack of the appropriate enzymes, are intestinal challenges such as bloating, chronic fatigue, Fibromyalgia, irritable bowel, migraine headaches, acid reflux and diarrhea.  Discovering your Paleolithic Diet, I believe, is the best eating plan for each of us still.

It’s a fact that our DNA has been developing since time began.  Around 30,000 years ago there was a cave person who looked just like you. The location of this person’s cave gives us a strong indication of which foods are best for you. Caves located by the ocean obviously ate sea foods and more than likely fruits and vegetables that grow near the shores. Caves located in the mountains had access to fruits and berries as well as some animals. It only makes sense that since our DNA was developing during this period; the foods that we consumed would still be the most familiar to our body. The more nomadic of the tribes would be exposed to other food sources and types but the average cave dweller did not roam the earth as much as had been thought .  It was not unusual for some Paleolithic families to remain in the same geographical area for decades providing the food held up. Therefore the food compatibility became stronger through the generations. It is almost impossible to discover our exact Paleolithic diet.  Without researching too deeply into the subject it would be safe to say that if you imagined yourself on a deserted   continent and only possessed a stick; what you eat would depend on what you could kill, knock out of a tree or dig up with that stick.

In contemporary times you could simulate this diet by walking around the perimeter of the grocery store avoiding all isles. We will research your perfect diet by removing certain foods that interfere with proper digestion. Symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, acid reflux, bloating, constipation or diarrhea are indicators of intestinal challenges. These same foods could be the reason that you have not been successful in managing your weight. Once we have eliminated the offending foods we can safely say that what remains are your perfect foods.  With Immuno 1 Bloodprint at Live Well Life Coaching, I help the client discover their perfect diet by exploring what their ideal foods are.

We utilize Immuno Laboratories a federally licensed blood laboratory located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  This laboratory developed a test known as the Immuno 1 Bloodprint. After our licensed phlebotomist draws your blood we send it to the Immuno Laboratories to be tested against 115 different food antigens (molecular level of food). By observing the antibody reaction your blood has to these antigens they can observe which foods blend well with your blood and which do not. The antibody reaction signifies that the body is sensitive to the foods and will have a difficult time breaking it down and absorbing the nutrients. This in turn will cause the body to utilize more than the budgeted amount of energy for digestion thus lessoning the amount of available energy to function normally.

The internal stress caused by the inability to efficiently process the food will result in inflammation and other intestinal challenges.  A comprehensive report is then generated detailing which foods are toxic to your system.  By removing these foods you will find that you feel better. Some people feel a tremendous boost in energy, sex drive and a general increase in mental acuity.  Others notice the constant intestinal irritability they feel is gone as well as an increase in their ability to manage their weight.

Eat for your Blood Type, Dr. D’Amato’s Eat for Your Blood Type diet theory, reinforces an often maligned theory that certain blood types respond better to some foods than others.  I have personally tested this theory by comparing dozens of Immuno 1 Bloodprint reports with the suggested eating lists for the corresponding client’s blood type.  Interestingly enough I observed a 75% average correlation between blood type food sensitivities and results from the IgG ELISA Assay. If you think about life 15,000 years ago this successful comparison makes sense.  There was probably only one blood type per village. After all, breeding was within the community and contemporary beliefs and practices about breeding within the family structure were not in place then. There was a good possibility that many generations came and went before an outside blood type was introduced into the Paleolithic community.  Seventy five percent is a substantial correlation and I feel strongly about recommending this theory in the search for your Paleolithic diet.

Elimination Eating Plan - The elimination eating plan is quite literal.  The process is to eliminate the offending foods that slow metabolism and result in intestinal challenges that result in poor health and weight gain. There are four main categories of food that seem to cause the majority of our intestinal challenges that could result in fatigue, acid reflux, headaches and weight gain. These categories are gluten (a starchy protein molecule found in most grains), casein protein (milk protein), citric acid (citrus fruit and tomatoes), and eggs.

It is unrealistic to think that you can eliminate all four categories simultaneously and not disrupt your entire life and those close to you. I start with the elimination of all gluten and casein foods.  These two categories cover 80% of the sensitivities experienced by humans. This elimination is developed in stages and after 1 month in full swing, the benefits are clearly noticeable. You feel less bloating after meals and your energy level is noticeably increased.

Children are our greatest teachers.  Why?  Because kids see, hear and feel things that adults don't.  If you want to know what's going on in a room, watch the children and their reflection of the behavior patterns that occur around them.   Remember that because children have not developed the verbal skills to describe these experiences is very frustrating to both the child and the adult that is valiantly trying to understand.  That leaves but one option.  If they can't tell you what's going on, they will most assuredly show you.   Daily more children, teens and young adults are being placed on psychotropic drugs to control these behaviors.  It is said these young people are unable to focus, concentrate or complete tasks given to them.  Is this true or are they just reflecting back the same quality of attention given to them?

What does it mean to be present with a child - or with anyone for that matter?  Do you give your full focus and attention to the important people in your life?  Do you give your full focus and attention to your children when they speak?  Being able to listen, focus and give respect to a child requires a level of awareness that is only available when the mind is not engaged in other thoughts.   Do you have the potential within you to be the kind of teacher these children need or is it their potential that will hold this world together and lead it into the next millennium? First ask yourself - what is potential?  How do you measure it?  How do you recognize it?  How do you encourage its development?  Do you know the answers to these questions?  If not, ask a young person.  They may not be able to tell you in fancy language but they will tell you from their heart.  A group of teenagers, many of which have been on or are currently taking behavioral modification drugs, were recently interviewed.  Their responses to these questions included: potential is the gift inside you that makes you special.  It is your promise, your hidden treasure.  It is the tools brought with you to accomplish your mission.  It is what makes you different than everyone else.  You can't measure it because it has no limits.  Watch, listen and learn.  If you pay attention, you can't miss it.  And then the answers really began to change.  How do you encourage someone to develop their potential?  Listen, pay attention, spend time with them, meet their friends, find out what movies they are watching, what classes do they like in school, what classes do they hate and why?  The one thing these teens did agree on was their need to be respected.  More than one voiced their unhappiness that adults expected kids to show respect and yet they did not give respect in return.  One teen said, "We know what we need.  We need you to listen to us.  We are a lot smarter than most people give us credit for, even if we aren't doing very well in school."  Another teen said, "Just because I don't get what they're teaching in some of my classes, the way they are teaching it, doesn't mean that I need Special Ed.  I need my teacher to explain things the way I can understand them."   When a life long educator was asked the same questions, she said she believed that all children held an inner treasure, hidden from view.  Sometimes it's like finding a buried treasure.  You have to provide them with various opportunities and then pay very close attention to their reactions and accomplishments.  Keep your eyes open for changes in their appearance, demeanor, interest or lack of, expressions - especially the light in their eyes.  Sometimes the changes are very subtle, but when that change is nurtured it becomes a positive force in the child's life.  Teaching is like cooking.  Sometimes you have to tweak the recipe to suit your tastes.  The same applies to required learning.  Sometimes you have to modify the way you teach subjects to fit your students learning styles.  Honor the differences in the way your children and students learn instead of trying to make them all do everything the same way.   An old Chinese proverb says:  Tell me - I forget; Show me - I remember; Involve me - I understand.  Involve your children and students in the learning process.  Unlock their hidden potential and allow that light to shine for the entire world to see.    About the author:  Mary M. You’ve made it.  You walked across that stage and received your diploma.  High School is over – so now what?  What’s next?  You have now arrived at one of the major crossroads you will likely ever come to in your life.  Which road do you take?  How do you decide? Do you go to a 2-year community college, a 4-year university, vocational training – or something else?            What do you want to be when you grow up? People have been asking you that question since you were a young child.  Is the answer any clearer now?  How many times have you changed your mind?  Sure you’ve done the personality profiling, taken all the quizzes, and maybe even checked your horoscope to find out which career you were destined for.  But so did every other high school graduate.  Yet, we all know at least one person who now holds that degree they invested so much time and money in getting, and they aren’t even working in the same field of study.  So who really has the answer to that question?            It’s time to get out of your brain and into your heart.  That’s right – the answer you are looking for has been inside you all along. In your heart, the one place where all the answers are kept and the one place most of us are afraid to explore.   That’s where a Life Coach comes in.              A Life Coach is someone who has been specially trained to help you go deep within yourself and discover those answers for yourself.  A Life Coach isn’t afraid to ask the really tough questions and help you find the answers you seek.  A Life Coach will utilize compassion, clarity, trust, and honesty and will be completely non-judgmental.  There are Life Coach’s that specialize in working with young people and people in every walk of life.  Even if you are one of the many people currently walking a path that no longer serves your purpose, a Life Coach will help you discover your true purpose in life. You are never too young or too old.  Imagine knowing that you are actually walking down the path that you were destined to walk – the path that was created especially for you.  Isn’t it worth investing in your own knowing – instead of investing in what someone else says you should be doing?  After all, are you a human doing or a human being?  It’s time to find out! It’s dark.  Please let me out!  I have a light; it’s inside me.  I wish I could share it with you, but no one can see it.  All my friends have lights too, but no one can see their lights either.  My light needs to shine.  I was born to share my light with the world.  Just because I’m a kid doesn’t mean I have nothing to contribute.  Is there anyone out there that has a key?  Unlock my box.  Hurry – before it’s too late, before my light goes out.

Henry David Thoreau said, “What lies before us and what lies behind us are small matters – compared to what lies within us.”  But what if you were unable to express the feelings and knowledge inside you?  Many adults experience that each day.  They know how frustrating it can be.

Imagine for just a moment what a child must feel like.  Remember, “children are to be seen – not heard.”  Children haven’t had those same life experiences that allow them to express their inner most feelings, desires and knowledge.  Especially if they don’t express themselves in an “acceptable manner.”  Oops, there’s that box again.

Copy this down – memorize this – it has to be done this way – recite that back – sound familiar?  This is what a typical school day in Arizona consists of.  Why?  Because funding for education is based upon test scores and for most schools, test scores are based upon how high a child scores on a standardized test or maybe on how low they score.  What label has been placed on your child?  Score too high, they are exceptional – score too low – they must be learning disabled or have some type of disorder.  But what if it’s much easier than that?  What if all we needed to do was return control of the classrooms to the teachers and help them to understand how the children in their class learn best?  What if we gave the teachers all the keys to all the little boxes and let them unlock the lights within?  What if we actually took the time to find out how our children learn best?  How many parents even know their primary learning style – let alone that of their children?  It’s time to find out.  Our children are our future and the future lights of the world.  Can you see the light?  About the author: Mary M. Is it really possible to have TOO much self esteem?  I am not talking about the arrogant, braggart kind of “I’m great!” sermons that we occasionally get to encounter.  I am talking about the deep-seated kind of self esteem that gives its owner a shine to their eyes and a glow to their soul.  You know when someone has it by their body language, their tone of voice, and the sure, steady way that they maneuver through life.  When their energy field overlaps into yours, you feel comfort.  Or energy.  Or inspiration.

Who would not want to raise the loving energy with which they regard themselves? Here is an easy way to do this in ten minutes a day.

First,  jot down ten adjectives that describe you.  These words can be things that people have told you or complimented you on.  Remember the ones that felt REALLY good to hear!  While you are at it, take a moment to truly SAVOR how good this felt when you first heard it.  Some examples could be:  brilliant, funny, genuine, giving, healthy, caring, spiritual.  The key is to use actual words that people have said or written.

Next, jot down ten words that you WISH people would use to describe you.  These should be things that no one has mentioned but you crave for them to, describing attributes that you know you have but are not known for.  Perhaps these would be traits that you are yearning to more deeply express or develop.  Examples could be: patient, fun, tenacious, unwavering, decisive, strong.

Then, add ten more words, this time using words that you feel do NOT describe you but you want them to.  These are words of your future self.  It is okay to use phrases in addition to single words.  Some examples could be:  articulate, professionally successful, sought after, loved/loving, wealthy, famous, etc., etc., etc.
Let the sky be the limit!  Don’t worry, no one else will see this list .  Be sure to include words that you would share with few other except for your significant other or best friend.  Let this be deeply personal.

Now, take an index card, and write in  huge letters: “I AM…” at the top.  Now jumble and jot down your thirty words below.  It is important to mix the order well.  Post the card somewhere by the mirror you use to freshen up by (okay, primp!) in the morning.   Copy your card and place it near the spot where you like to relax just before bedtime.

Read your card for five minutes in the morning as you prepare for your day.  Read the copy for five minutes before you go to bed.  Set a timer.  (Read ALOUD on your toughest days!)  Just faithfully follow this for at least 21 days and see what happens.  The subconscious is very powerful.  You’ll soon come to know your own power as well!
