Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA) is one of the few schools in the Arizona to offer an Asian Bodywork Program. This program incorporates the ancient practices used over 5000 years ago to heal the mind, body, and soul, which still work today. These forms of healing include various techniques of bodywork and acupressure. In this program students learn Western Anatomy and Pathology, as well as specialize in Asian Theories. You choose the specialty that best helps you express your Gifts.  You may choose from Tui Na or Zen Shiatsu and you can choose to take 500 hours or 600 hours of training.  The 600 hour porgram an eligible Title IV program and Federal Financial Aid is available to those who qualify.

Tui Nais a hands-on-body treatment using acupressure for the purpose of bringing the body into balance, taught by world renowned teacher, Joel Siegnor. The principles being balanced are the eight principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The practitioner may brush, knead, roll/press and rub the areas between each of the joints (known as the eight gates) to open the body's defensive (wei) chi and get the energy moving in both the meridians and the muscles. The practitioner can then use range of motion, traction, or the stimulation of acupressure points to treat both acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, as well as many non-musculoskeletal conditions.

Tui Na literally translates to "push pull" and is the name given to Chinese Medical Massage. Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tui Na uses a variety of hand techniques and passive and active stretching to restore correct anatomical musculoskeletal relationships, neuromuscular patterns, and to increase the circulation of Qi and Blood to remove biochemical irritants.  Acupoints may be selected to re-balance and harmonize the flow of Qi and Blood through the organ meridians in order to facilitate healing and prevent further injury. As Tui Na does not usually apply any oils or use mechanical devices, it is not necessary to undress during a session.

Zen Shiatsu, under the direction of Master Practitioner, Lyn Matthews, is a form of bodywork administered by thumbs, fingers, palms, elbows, feet and knees.  Pressure is applied to all parts of the body along specific pathways known as meridians. It is understood this technique stimulates the natural healing powers of the body, wherefore symptoms of disease lessen and vitality is regained.  From the Western point of view, shiatsu works directly to calm the autonomic nervous system, which has the effect of calming nervous distress and increasing resistance to stress. By helping with blood and lymph circulation in the body, shiatsu helps to maintain and improve muscle tone and healthy internal organ functions. It is believed that shiatsu can also strengthen the immune system. The shiatsu recipient is fully clothed during the treatment. No massage oils or lotions are used or needed because the practitioner does not slide along the body surface, but gives a series of gentle specific presses along the meridian pathways.
