Holistic health is not itself a method of treatment, rather it is an approach or philosophy as to how treatment should be applied.  At Southwest Institute of Healing Arts we use the term Holistic to mean whole - made up of interdependent parts.  In fact, we could choose to spell holistic with a 'w' for wholistic health care based on our commitment to the whole person - mind/ body/ spirit.  When this meaning is applied to illness, it is called holistic medicine and includes a number of factors, such as  dealing with the root cause of an illness, increasing patient involvement, and considering both conventional (allopathic) and complementary (alternative) therapies.

Our Holistic Health Care Associates Degree program addresses the physical body with classes on nutrition, massage and bodywork and additionally incorporating aspects such as emotional and spiritual well-being through hypnotherapy, life coaching, spiritual studies and yoga.  The goal of this degree program us to  encompasses the entire person, rather than just the lack of physical pain or disease.  We fully embrace the ideals put forth by the American Holistic Health Association for the purpose of promotes holistic health as an approach to creating wellness:

  • Balance and integrate the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the whole person
  • Establish respectful, cooperative relationships with others and the environment
  • Make wellness-oriented lifestyle choices
  • Actively participate in your health decisions and healing process.

The  Holistic Health Care Associates Degree program is designed to have  137 hours of General Education classes, including Mastery Skills for Health Care Practitioners, Public Speaking, Writing for Publication and a  Statistical Research Project. 

The  Holistic Health Care Core classes include holistic  over view classes including  Introduction to Life Coaching,  Hypnotherapy - Foundations Level I,   Introduction to Nutrition, Introduction to Ayurveda, Stress Management and Optimum Health & Wellness.  As part of this degree program graduates develop a vocational expertise in massage, Asian bodywork or Western Herbalism. As with all of the degree programs and many of the diploma program at SWIHA, students choose a speciality that best expresses their 'gifts'.  There are 15 choices known a Primary Specialties which including areas such Aromatherapy, Chinese Shamanistic Medicine, Cranial Unwinding; Hypnotherapy; Life Coaching, Reflexology, Reiki, Polarity, Spiritual Studies, and Yoga Teacher Training.

Students who attend the program full-time may be completed in as little as eighteen months, earning up to 60 credits. This program is considered two academic years and Title IV Federal Financial aid is available to those students who quality.
