Southwest Institute of Healing Arts invites you to take part in the specialty courses offered in Zen Shiatsu.  Utilizing this technique will enhance the longevity of the licensed massage therapist's career by avoiding overuse of the therapist's hands, wrists, and thumbs and incorporating other core parts of the therapist's body.

Zen Shiatsu is administered by the therapist's palms, elbows, feet and knees, along with the hands and fingers.  The Zen Shiatsu therapist is trained to feel the body's condition, particularly the circulation, to discover imbalances in the body.  By helping with blood and lymph circulation in the body, shiatsu helps to maintain and improve muscle tone and healthy internal organ functions.  Shiatsu works directly to calm the autonomic nervous system, which has the effect of calming nervous distress and increasing resistance to stress.  It is believed that shiatsu can also strengthen the immune system.

The shiatsu recipient is fully clothed during the treatment.  No massage oils or lotions are used or needed because the practitioner does not slide along the body surface, but gives a series of gentle specific presses along the meridian pathways.
