What is Therapeutic Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a generic term referring to the use of essential oils, sometimes in combination with other holistic techniques, commonly massage. An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled (most frequently by steam or water) from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant.

Essential oils are not really oily-feeling at all, contrary to the use of the word "oil". Most essential oils are clear, but some oils such as patchouli, orange and lemongrass are amber or yellow in color. Essential oils contain the true essence of the plant it was derived from. Essential oils are highly concentrated and just a little goes a long way.

SWIHA has lots of unique courses to deepen your study of aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy classes are now available online! In the online versions of these courses, you will still get to experience mixing oils, creating your own scents, and receiving feedback from your faculty member on the formulas you used to reach target scents.
